I started by trying the suggestion to uninstall and reinstall iTunes. But after successfully uninstalling and restarting the computer, the iTunes installer now is repeatedly failing. No information on the error, just that if failed. I will try the upgrade you suggested in the next few days to see if that makes any difference.

I managed to get iTunes successfully installed again with your instructions to uninstall everything apple, but the original issues are still happening.
